Northwood Removals

Briefing

What not to bring

Most of what an assignment move costs is carrying things you did not need, to a property that already had them, and then carrying them back.

Find out what is already there first

A large share of the rental stock around Northwood is let furnished or serviced. Before you decide anything, get the inventory or a photograph of each room from the agent — it is a reasonable thing to ask for and it usually removes most of a household from your list.

Beds, wardrobes, sofas, dining furniture, white goods and the bulk of the kitchen are all commonly included. Those are also, not coincidentally, the heaviest and most expensive things to move.

What is genuinely worth bringing

A short list, in rough order of how much difference it makes:

  • Clothes, and more of them than a holiday would need.
  • Papers and documents — the ones that are painful to replace from another country.
  • Your actual working setup: a chair that fits you, a monitor, the right cables.
  • A small number of things that make a let feel like somewhere you live rather than somewhere you stay. Everybody has a different four or five items and everybody underestimates how much they matter.
  • Anything a child will not settle without. This is not sentimentality; it is the difference between a hard first week and an easy one.

What to leave, even though you want to bring it

Furniture, unless the property is unfurnished. Bulk kitchen equipment. Books beyond the ones you are actually reading. Anything seasonal that will not see its season while you are here. Garden things. Sports kit for a sport you have not done recently.

None of that is a judgement. It is arithmetic: every one of those is paid for twice, and the second payment arrives at the end of a posting when nobody has spare attention.

Put the rest in one place

Whatever is not coming needs somewhere to be for the duration, and it is worth that somewhere being a single, listed, sealed place rather than three relatives and a loft.

The garage arrangement is free right up until the relative moves house, the roof leaks, or a conversation gets awkward — and at that point you are dealing with it from another country.

Expect the return to be bigger

It always is. People accumulate, and a stay of any length generates things. If you are deciding how much space to book for the return leg, book for more than you brought.

A short attachment, a full posting, indefinitely, or not at all any more. That one answer gets us further than a room count does, and it is the first thing we will ask.
