Removals in Northwood, planned around how long you’re staying.

We are a removals firm in Northwood HA6, and a lot of Northwood is here on an assignment rather than because it bought a house. A short attachment, a full posting, a stay that quietly became permanent, or the day the posting ends and you go somewhere else entirely.

Those are four different removals, and the thing that separates them is not the property or the volume. It is the term.

How long you're here

Four terms, four different removals

Each one decides something different about what comes, what goes into store, what gets shipped, and what you should not bring at all.

Weeks or a season, not a settling-in

A short attachment

You are here for a defined, short stretch and then you are somewhere else. The property is usually furnished or serviced, and the correct answer to most of what you own is to leave it where it is.

The trap Shipping or carting a whole household for a short stay. It is the most expensive mistake on this page and it is made almost entirely out of optimism.

A defined term with a known end

A full posting

A proper term with an end on it. Long enough that the whole household comes, short enough that the return is already visible on the horizon — which makes it the only move here with two halves to plan.

The trap Treating the arrival as the whole job. The return is already on the horizon and it is much cheaper if somebody thought about it at the start.

No end date, or an end nobody has set

An indefinite stay

You are not counting. Either the assignment became permanent, or it was always going to be, or the family decided the town suits them and the job can sort itself out. This is the only one on the page that is simply a move.

The trap Forgetting what is still in store somewhere else. Consolidate it into this move rather than paying to keep it where it is for another year.

The assignment ends and you leave

A departure

The assignment has ended and you are going somewhere else, frequently overseas. It is the move with the most decisions in it and the least time to make them, because the end of a posting is rarely quiet.

The trap Leaving the three-way split until the day. It is a decision-heavy hour at the worst possible moment, and it is the reason departures overrun.

The three-way split

Everything divides three ways, and doing it early is the job

Every assignment move divides three ways, and doing the dividing at the property rather than in a van is most of what makes the difference between a calm day and a long one. We do it with you at the survey, in writing, so nobody is making decisions with a crew standing in the hall.

  1. On the van, or in the shipment

    Comes with you

What you will actually need where you are going, packed to the standard that journey requires. If it is crossing a border that means export wrapping and a real inventory, and those cannot be retrofitted once a van is loaded.

    We handle this

  2. Sealed here, under one inventory

    Goes into store

Things you want but cannot take, or should not pay to move twice. Sealed once, listed once, and delivered when there is somewhere to deliver them to — not unpacked and repacked in between.

    We handle this

  3. Sold, given away or cleared

    Goes nowhere

The category everybody under-estimates. It is cheaper to decide about a thing than to move it, and far cheaper than to move it, store it and then decide about it anyway.

    You decide this

How we do it at the survey

Local

What nobody tells you about moving here

Five things about Northwood that change a removal and that a firm working the town for the first time will find out on the day, at your expense.

More on the town
  • The houses are bigger than they look from the road

Northwood and Moor Park are largely inter-war detached, and the interesting volume is almost never in the rooms. Lofts converted and unconverted, cellars, garages and a garden building are all routine here and all routinely left off a survey done from a bedroom count.

  • Moor Park is a private estate, not just an address

Access, gates and roads there are managed rather than public, and arrangements need making in advance rather than explaining at a barrier. It is entirely workable and it is not something to discover on the morning.

  • The lanes north and west are narrow

Towards Batchworth, Harefield and the Chorleywood side the approach roads thin out and a large vehicle sometimes cannot turn. Where that is true the job becomes a shuttle, and that belongs in the quote rather than in a conversation on the day.

  • A lot of the rental stock is furnished

Which is why so many arrivals here are part-loads. If you have not seen the property yet, find out what is already in it before you decide what to bring — it removes most of a household from the list.

  • The useful windows follow the school year

Families on assignments here plan around school places rather than around leases, so the quiet moving periods are the long breaks and the busy ones are the edges of terms. Ask early if your dates are near an edge.

Removals in Northwood, street by street

HA6 is several towns in one postcode

Why so much of Northwood is here on a posting is no secret: the military headquarters at Eastbury Park, Mount Vernon Hospital and an easy run into London all bring people in for a term and take them away again. What changes a removal is which part of HA6 they land in. We have no connection with any of those institutions; we just know the roads.

  • The town centre and Green Lane

Green Lane, High Street, Station Approach

The flats above the shops and the newer blocks off the High Street are the most common short-attachment addresses in Northwood. Green Lane is a working shopping street with bus stops and controlled bays near the Metropolitan line station, so the van needs a kerb booked through Hillingdon Council rather than a hopeful double-park.

  • Frithwood, Eastbury and the big-house roads

Frithwood Avenue, Eastbury Avenue, Eastbury Road, Dene Road

Arts-and-Crafts and inter-war detached houses on long front gardens. Plenty of room for a vehicle, but a long carry from the road, gravel drives that need boards, and lofts and garages that hold more than the house itself. School-run traffic around Eastbury Road shapes when a lorry can arrive.

  • Northwood Hills

Joel Street, Potter Street, Northwood Way, Windsor Close

Metroland semis and terraces around the second Metropolitan line station. Closer to an ordinary suburban move: narrower frontages, residents parked nose to tail, and a parade on Joel Street where loading has to work around the shops.

  • Moor Park and the private estates

Moor Park, Copse Wood, the roads off Sandy Lodge

Moor Park carries an HA6 address but sits over the county line in Three Rivers, and its roads are run by the estate rather than the council. Copse Wood is the same idea on the Ruislip side. Gates, access rules and permitted hours are arranged with the estate beforehand, never explained at the barrier.

  • Out along the main roads

Rickmansworth Road, Ducks Hill Road, Pinner Road

Houses fronting the A404 past Mount Vernon and the wooded run of Ducks Hill Road towards Ruislip have no side street to hide in. Where there is no drive we plan the load around the traffic, not across it, and say so in the quote.

Only moving a few rooms, or the contents of a furnished flat? Small removals and part-loads in Northwood are quoted as exactly that. For the longer version of all this, read moving house in Northwood HA6.

Included as standard

On every assignment job

  • The three-way split done at survey

Going, storing and going nowhere, agreed in writing before anything is packed. It is the single most useful hour of an assignment move.

  • One inventory across the whole term

So the return leg is a reconciliation rather than a rediscovery, and so nothing is quietly still in store two postings later.

  • Export-standard packing where it is needed

For anything crossing a border, with a manifest you can actually use at the other end. Quoted explicitly rather than assumed.

  • Condition photographs at both ends

Standard everywhere, and more useful than usual here because so much of the stock is let, inventoried and deposited against.

  • Storage that stays sealed

Listed once and left alone. Held for as long as the next posting takes to become real.

  • Handover-ready clearance

The property left clear and swept, with disposal paperwork, so the end of the assignment is not also the start of an argument.

What people say

Mostly people who will be somewhere else next

They asked how long we were here for before they asked how many bedrooms. Once I said it was a short attachment the whole conversation changed, and so did the price.
Dr A. Lindqvist Short attachment, Northwood Hills
The three-way split at the survey was worth the entire fee. We had been going round in circles about what to ship and somebody finally wrote it down.
The Oyelaran family Departure, Northwood to overseas
Our things were in three places by the end of the last posting. They collected from all of them on one job, including out of a storage unit in another county.
Rachel and Tom P. Indefinite move, Moor Park
Moor Park access was arranged before the day without me having to do anything. The previous firm spent an hour at the gate.
H. Chaudhry Full posting, Moor Park
They said outright that shipping our furniture for a short stay was a waste of money and that the flat was already furnished. They talked themselves out of a bigger job.
Ingrid S. Short attachment, Northwood
We moved in the long break because they pointed out the term dates mattered more than the lease dates. Obvious once said, and nobody else said it.
The Berhanes Full posting, Eastcote

Questions

The ones we actually get

Assignments and postings, departures and shipping, Northwood itself, and the practical side.

All questions
We are only here for a short attachment. Is it worth bringing anything?

Usually much less than people assume. A great deal of the rental stock around Northwood is furnished or serviced, which takes beds, sofas, wardrobes, white goods and most of the kitchen off the list before anybody packs a box.

What is worth bringing is clothes, papers, a workspace and whatever makes a let feel like somewhere you live. The rest is cheaper stored than carried twice.

Can you hold things in store while we are posted here?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Goods go in under one sealed inventory, they stay sealed, and they come out when there is somewhere to deliver them to.

The arrangement that most often goes wrong is a relative’s garage. It is free until the relative moves, the roof leaks or the relationship gets complicated, and then it is not.

Do you work with employers or relocation agents?

We will deal directly with whoever is coordinating your move — a relocation agent, an HR or welfare contact, or a family member — as long as you have told us in writing who they are and what they are authorised to agree.

We should be clear that we hold no official status, accreditation or approved-supplier relationship with any employer or institution, and we will not imply otherwise. We are a removals firm that understands how these moves work.

Our return date is not fixed yet.

That is normal and it is not a problem. We hold provisional dates at no cost and move them as often as they need moving, which on assignment moves is frequently several times.

Part of our load is going abroad and part is staying.

That is the standard departure shape and it is why we do the three-way split at the survey rather than on the day. Going with you, going into store, and going nowhere are three different destinations that get loaded in three different ways.

Anything crossing a border is packed to export standard with a proper inventory, and that has to be decided before the van rather than after.
