Northwood Removals

How long you're here

A departure

How longThe assignment ends and you leave

The assignment has ended and you are going somewhere else, frequently overseas. It is the move with the most decisions in it and the least time to make them, because the end of a posting is rarely quiet.

What the term decides

  • The load splits three ways and the split is the job. Something goes with you, something goes into store here, and something is not going anywhere — and getting that wrong at this end is expensive at the other.

  • Anything crossing a border is packed differently. Export wrapping, a proper inventory and a manifest are not the same as a domestic pack, and they cannot be retrofitted once the van is loaded.

  • The property has to be handed back. A let needs to be clear, clean and inspected, and an owned one being sold or let out has its own standard. Either way the clearance is part of the move rather than an afterthought.

  • You have more than you arrived with. Everybody does, and departures are consistently under-estimated for exactly that reason.

What we do about it

  • Split the load into going / storing / going nowhere at the property, before anything is loaded

  • Pack to export standard where the load is crossing a border, with an inventory you can actually use

  • Clear the property to a handover standard and provide the disposal paperwork

  • Hold things in store here for as long as the next posting takes to become real

The trap

Leaving the three-way split until the day. It is a decision-heavy hour at the worst possible moment, and it is the reason departures overrun.

A short attachment, a full posting, indefinitely, or not at all any more. That one answer gets us further than a room count does, and it is the first thing we will ask.
